The Whispers of Charleston

Today were talking about the French Protestants known as the French Huguenots who fled religious persecution under Louis XIV had a significant impact on the early Charles Towne Colony. Though many arrived impoverished the Huguenots skills and education allowed them to quickly establish themselves as merchants and craftsmen. Many Huguenot names figure in the history of the city, such as Ravenel, Gillard, Porcher, Laurens, and Mazyck. Two large groups of Frenchmen came to South Carolina. in 1755 more than 1000 Acadian exiles were sent to the colony from Nova Scotia.  from 1793 until the Republic of Haiti was declared in 1804 about 500 refugees from Saint Domingue came to the city during the Haitian Revolution. Charlestons Huguenot Church is the only surviving Huguenot Church in the United States to remain independent of other denominations and retain the historic liturgy of the French Protestant Church,

Today were gonna talk about how the Caribbean and Barbadian people have influenced the Carolinas, especially Charleston. As the Lords Proprietors sent out the Barbados Proclamation, inviting those interested in leaving the island to undertake an expedition back to Charles Town. The Carolinas essentially became the "Colony of a Colony" a Colony of Barbados. The early Barbadian government was promulgated through the Anglican Church, the Epsicopal Church in the Carolinas. In the early history of Barbados it was illegal to educate the enslaved as it was the Carolinas. Religious groups such as the Society of Quakers, the Society fro the Propagation of the Gospel, and the Moravian Church were some of the early groups to violate those laws. To communicate enslaved Africans who were captured from different parts of West Africa and spoke different languages came up with a language that mixed West African and English dialects known as Bajan in Barbados and Gullah in the Carolinas.

Hey guys happy 4th of July and Happy 250th Birthday America. I'll have episodes out hopefully tomorrow

Here come the English.  The English have alot more influence on Charleston than people may think. Alot of Georgian and Carolinian taste are simular, from furniture, to silver, to elegant pieces, to clothing, portraits, newspapers, gambling, spirits, and religion. Even though these English moved to the new world, the people still had vested interest in England. 

Today were talking about the Immigrants that came to Charleston and called Charleston home. Some fled to get away from Louis XIV because of religious reasons, others came over to start fresh. Over the next few episodes were gonna talk about those different immigrants that found their way to Charles Town and made it home, and how that helped Charleston become what it is today. 

Joseph Purcell laid out Mazyckborough for Alexander Mazyck in 1786. it was bounded by Chapel, Elizabeth and Calhoun streets and the Cooper River. Beginning in 1766 Christopher Gadsen and the Mechanicks party who called themselves the 'Sons of Liberty' met under the live oak tree many times to oppose the policies of Great Britain toward the colonies. The British cut down the oak tree to prevent it becoming a Patriot Shrine. 
Mazyck Lands this area bounded generally by the present day streets of Broad, Legare, Queen, Archdale, Beaufain and Smith, was granted to James Moore in 1698 and conveyed by the trustees of his will to Isaac Mazyck in 1712. In 1742 the Mazyck Lands were partitioned amoung the heirs of Isaac Mazyck and lots were surveyed and offered for sale.

The Village of Harleston also frequently called Harlestons Green, more rarely Harlestonborough, and more recently Harleston Village, was originally part of a grant made to John Coming and Henry Hughes in 1671. After the death of Coming and his Wife Mrs. Affra Coming, it was inherited by Mrs. Comings Nephew, John Harleston. Streets in the village of Harleston were names for prominent men of the period, in England and the Province. The Royal Governor, LOrd Charles Greville Montagu, along with Lt. Gov. William Bull; Hector Beranger de Beaufain, Collector of Customs and member of Parliament who defended Colonial rights, as well as John Rutledge, Thomas Lynch and Christopher Gadsden who were active in the Provincial Government and later leaders in the American revolution all were commemorated.

Hampstead was laid out for Henry Laurens in 1789. a plan of the suburbs shows 130 lots, Hampstead was bounded to the west by meeting Street, South by woolfe and South streets, north by line and blake streets and east by bay Street. 
Islington was developed around 1800 at the west end of cannon Street near the present Ashley River bridges. it was named for the town of Islington England. 
Laurens square now part of ansonborough this area bounded today by Laurens, Anson, and Society streets and the cooper river was called Rattrays Green.

Mrs. Affray Coming in 1698 made a deed of gift of 17 acres of land to the minister of the church of England in Charles Town and his successors in office. Glebe Lnd in English eccliastical law meaning a glebe is any land belonging to or yielding revenue to a parish church or to a church benefice such as a rectory. St Philips parsonage wasd built on the glebe lands at some point. Rev Alexander Garden who arrived Charles Town in 1719 was the rector of St Philips. In 1744 with contributions from the local people and from the society for the propagation do the gospel of Londen, Commissary Garden established a school fro black and Indian children. in 1770 act of the assembly authorized the opening of streets through the glebe lands and through Harleston village.  The Glebe Land were divided in 1770 between St philips and St Michaels church's. in 1797 the parsonage lot at Wentworth and St philip streets were subdivided into 14 lots and blebe Street was cut through the block from wentworth to george Street.

Daniel Fairchild was a brick and lumber factor who built this three story frame house dwelling on the site of present day 79 Ashley Avenue. Daniel decided to move the frame when he decided to build a bigger house. the house stayed in the family until 1908. between 1842 and 1850 Fairchild built a three story stuccoed brick house in the Greek revival style
