The Whispers of Charleston

Today we're stopping Infront of two different homes. The First one is gonna be 55 Ashley Avenue with is the Baker Hospital Building, this hospital cost 100,000 to build and the hospital was founded by Dr. Archibald E. Baker Sr or Charleston and Dr. Lawrence Craig of Dillon who specializes in surgery and obstetric Medicine. The our second stop is 61 Ashley Avenue the Richard Peyton House, this small stuccoed brick single house was built by merchant Richard H Peyton. the home was intended as the rear portion of a marger home which was never built.

Were off to Ashley Avenue. Ashley Avenue has had a lot of previous names and streets, that became Ashley Avenue. Ashley Avenue was first laid out in Harleston Village as Lynch Street, named for Thomas Lynch in 1770. In 1897 was when Ashley Avenue was applied to the length of the street.

Today we come to an end at Archdale Street. Were making our final stop at 49 Archdale Street at the Darby Building. John Darby built this house around the early 1800s, he was a silver and gold Smith and later became a grocer. Some of the houses on Archdale and Beaufain Streets were demolished to help extend Market Street, so unfortanly this home was and its new addition on its South side isolated on a small triangle of land.

Today were at 40 Archdale street to talk about John Henry Bulwinkle and his three story building. At one point it was a "Blind Tiger" during prohibition. A Saloon and A grocery story did occupy some of the building. in the 1920s a billiard parlor operated in the building. this building as recevied a Carolopolis award from the presercation society of Charleston.

Today were stopping at Jacob Francis House, Jacob was a mariner from austria who made Charleston home and during the Civil war ran supplies during the civil was to the union blockade. His home was recognized with a carolopolis during the latter part of the 19th century.

Today were gonna visit the French Quarter and walk around and see the buildings and talk about the people who have made this area home. Well talk about the French inhabitants and their influences in the area, as well as the Germans and the italians.

Today were off to 21 and 23 Archdale Street were we will talk about Samuel Wilson and the two homes he lived in on Archdale Street. Dr. Wilson acquired the land though his marriage to Catherine Marian Mazyck. Wilson built 23 Archdale while living in 21 Archdale, Etienne Poincignon had purchased the houses, Mr. Poincignon was a wealthy immigrant from the French West Indies. Both homes were built with Charleston Grey Brick laid in Flemish bond pattern and both have fine Adamesue interiors.

Hey guys sorry for the short break, its been a crazy few days. But I promise I will be back in a day or two. Thank y'all for hanging tight with me, y'all are awesome. 

Today we stop at 16 and 19 Archdale Street to talk about these beautiful homes. 16 Archdale was built by Henry Viohl a German grocer. and 19 Archdale was the home of Phillip Porcher who was a Patriot at the beginning of the Revolution and help the Government of South Carolina. 

Today were going to talk about Elliott Land and the Elliott Family, and were also going to talk about Free School Lands and how the land changed hands and what was expected from this property.
