The Whispers of Charleston

Barre (pronounced Barry) Street was surveyed in 1 770 as the westernmost street of Harleston Village, running south to north from a creek just below Beaufain Street and crossing a creek just to the north of Bull Street. The street. however. was platted through marsh lands and never actually laid out.
Gov. Thomas Bennett's House was built on land inherited from his father. Thomas Bennett. Sr. (1754-1814). The senior Bennett. in cooperation with Daniel Cannon, built and operated large lumber mills that used both wind and tidal power. After the partnership ended, Bennett took his son, Thomas Bennett Jr. (1781-1865) into partnership and in 1802 the vounger man continued the business alone.
In addition to the lumber business. which Thomas Bennett Jr. eventuallv turned over to his son-in- law. Jonathan Lucas III. in 1847. Bennett was active in rice milling, building Bennett's Mill on the Cooper River side of the city. When built Bennett's house looked out on his rice and saw mills and his mill ponds to the south and east. which were filled in the 1880s and 90s. He was also active in banking, serving as president and director of the Bank of the State of South Carolina and director of the Planters and Mechanics Bank of South Carolina
In addition to his business interests. Thomas Bennett Jr. served as a member of the S.C. House of Representatives, 1804-06, 1808-10. 1812-18. Speaker of the House, 1814-18: member of the South Carolina Senate. 1819-20 and 1837-40: and Governor of South Carolina. 1820-22. He was Intendant (mayor) of Charleston, 1812-14.
The brick house is two-and-a-half stories on a raised basement of stuccoed brick. The one-story piazza on the south side of the house has a fanlighted entrance with entablature and segmental arches rising from unfluted Roman Doric columns. The piazza and iron-railed entrance platform with curving steps rest on arcades of stuccoed brick.

2 Atlantic Street May and Leila Waring House the two sisters bought the house in 1923. May was a writer and Leila was a painter.
5 Atlantic Street William E Holmes was a dealer in paints, oils, and other products, with his offices and warehouses on East Bay Street, he built this rental property in the Colonial Revival style
16 Atlantic Street this structure has changed significantly over time, Originally it was a one story frame building that housed a grocery store owned by A.E Stelling. By 1930 the entire structure was covered in brick.

Sometime before 1739 Lynchs Lane was laid out from Meeting Street to the Cooper River with a width of 12 feet. by the 1800 the Street from Church Street to East Battery had been widened to 26 feet.
1 & 3 Atlantic Street this pair of houses both two and half stories of wood with gable roofs was built by Capt Benjamin Smith who was a shipbuilder.

218 Ashley Ave the Church of the Holy Communion. This congregation was organized in 1848 in the home of the Rev. Nathaniel Bowen. The commandant of the nearby Federal Arsenal was present and offered a room at the Arsenal fro the purpose of worship. 
219 Ashley Ave Henry Buck was a German grocer who built a two and a half story wooden store and residence. Buck was an ardent horseman who raced horses on Wagners racetrack at the Grove.

192 Ashley Ave was built by The Wickenberg Family in 1859 and the home was in  the Italianate style with elaborate window cornices and door hood.
216 Ashley Ave was built by Thomas R Waring an officer of the Bank of the State of South Carolina. the house remained in the family until 1881 it was built in the Italianate style popular in the 1850s

This outstanding Greek Revival mansion was built by John Hume Lucas who was a wealthy planter. The house was donated by Margaret Wickliffe of West Union South Carolina to the Health Sciences Foundation of the Medical University of South Carolina and restored in 1977

Come walk Alexander street with me. As i stop at different houses i will be talking about these homes and what makes them special. On this episode we will stop at 5 Alexander Street and talk about Simon Jude Chancognie.

Drayton hall is considered one of the finest examples of Georgian Palladian architecture in the United States. Its grounds represent one of the most significant, undisturbed historic landscapes in America. Construction of the house was begun in 1739 by John Drayton, and 7 generations of the Drayton Family lived there until 1974, when the family transferred the property to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. A rare survival, the house had only a few coats of paint in its history and was never upgraded with plumbing or electricity. The National Trust interprets the history and architecture of the house and the lives here for more than 300 years.

107 Ashley Ave was built by Thomas Corbett who was planter on land which his wife Elizabeth Harleston inherited from her John Harleston. Francis J Pelzer was one of the houses prominent later occupants, his initials are etched in the glass of the front door.
113 Ashley Ave is the Bennett McElhenny House. the house was built by Gov Thomas Bennett on the only high point of and on Lynch Street now Ashley Ave. the house sold to Susan McElhenny who's daughter married Paul Hamilton Hayne. their son Paul Hamiliton Hayne was born here in the home in 1830
